FROM RUSSIAN MALL TO TMALL
Tmall is a multi-million marketplace owned by the Alibaba Group, which also owns Aliexpress’s online marketplace, developed in 2017. For the Russian consumer, they differ in that Tmall’s warehouses are located in Russia (for Aliexpress – in China), and all products in this giant store are tested for quality and have a certificate of Eurasian compliance with EAC.I was responsible for the development of the interface of this product, designed for a multimillion audience, and led this project from sketches on paper and the development of the grid and UI Kit to the development of modules for the internal system, user tests, and analytics.
TMALL BEFORE ME
The Russian Mall was created in 2015 even before my joining the company and looked something like this when I just started to work in Alibaba Group.
When in 2017, the majority of the Russian team of the Aliexpress was transferred from China to Russia, the first test project was launched and recalled from Mall to Mallnia.
I was responsible for the redesign of Mallnia, but unfortunately we didn’t allocate resources for development from scratch and we had to use ready-made modules of AliExpress.
After some time, the project began to grow very much, the audience greatly increased and our management decided to make the whole project from scratch. Resources for development were allocated, many programmers and designers were hired, and we proceeded to the last, final stage – to create Tmall as it looks like now.
MY FIRST PROPOSAL
My first suggestion in visual design was getting rid of unnecessary graphics and focusing on high-quality products pictures and in interaction design to use Bootstrap grid for the best view on different screens.
First, we made a responsive grid that adapted to the most basic screens.
Clean and minimalistic design focused only on high-quality product images without unnecessary graphics and other elements. Interactive elements, such as countdowns, interactive prices and discounts etc.
